Son criaturas imaginarias, ficticias, legendarias y misteriosas que aparecen en muchas mitologías de distintas civilizaciones o en culturas y leyendas. Muchas son combinaciones entre dos animales, o bien entre un animal y el ser humano. Tienen carácter sobrenatural y no se tiene una creencia total de su existencia.

Unas de las criaturas fantásticas y mitológicas que más llaman la atención son las hadas y los unicornios, respectivamente.

El unicornio es una criatura mitológica representada habitualmente como un caballo blanco con patas de antílope, barba de chivo, y un cuerno en su frente. En las representaciones modernas, sin embargo, es idéntico a un caballo, sólo diferenciándose en la existencia de un cuerno en su frente.

El unicornio es un animal fabuloso, protagonista de numerosas historias y leyendas. En la Edad Media estaba considerado como un animal capaz de derrotar a animales más fuertes físicamente, incluso elefantes.

Son seres solitarios, que viven apartados y que son respetados por el resto de los animales. Se dice que sólo pueden ser vistos por los puros de corazón y tocados por los más bondadosos y tiernos. También se suele decir que tienen un punto débil, siendo amantes de la belleza, los unicornios se dejaban llevar y cambiaban su libertad por el cariño y los cuidados de alguna dama hermosa, convirtiéndose casi en un animal doméstico que acudía siempre a la misma hora a visitarla a la misma hora a su jardín. Por esto, son frecuentes las imágenes que les retratan cerca de doncellas, dejándose cuidar.

El cuerno del unicornio ha venido siendo a lo largo de la historia un objeto que se creía dotado de grandes poderes, desde purificar las aguas y hacerlas potables, hasta la curación de cualquier herida y el alargamiento de la vida, si se usaba una vez reducido a polvo. Se cuenta que si el cuerno se desprendía del animal, éste moría sin remedio.

Sin embargo, la hada es una criatura fantástica y etérea, personificada generalmente en forma de mujer hermosa, que según la tradición son protectoras de la naturaleza, producto de la imaginación, la tradición o las creencias y perteneciente a ese fabuloso mundo de los elfos, gnomos, duendes, sirenas y gigantes que dan color a las leyendas y mitologías de todos los pueblos antiguos. 

La mayoría de ellas se representan con alas.

Se dice de las hadas en la Edad Media inglesa que tienen poderes mágicos, viven en palacios encantados y hechizan o engañan a mortales inocentes.

Cuentan que el mundo de las hadas, es un mundo en el que hay que penetrar con suma cautela, pues no hay nada que enoje más a las hadas que unos seres humanos que se mueven curiosamente por sus particulares dominios.

Una de las tantas leyendas, sostiene que las hadas son ángeles caídos o paganos muertos que no han sido suficientemente buenos como para entrar en el paraíso, ni tan malos como para entrar en el infierno, quedando obligados a vivir eternamente a mitad de camino.
